“Laura” is the first single off of Bat for Lashes upcoming album The Haunted Man. There were two faces that I recognized right off the bat (no pun intended) that I had to share! The video itself was directed by Noel Paul (director of Father John Misty‘s “Hollywood Forever Cemetery Sings“) and stars Natasha Khan alongside the smoothest-dance-partner-cameo-ever by Marques Toliver and the exquisite Lavinia Co-op. YES PLEASE TO BOTH. Now Lavinia is one of the preeminent drag performers of the world. As a founding member of the gender and genre bending British performance troupe Bloolips in the mid-seventies, she moved to NYC in 1991 and has ruled the city after dark ever since. Watch a clip of her 2006 piece Installations Instiletos here.
As for the aforementioned Mr. Toliver, where do I even begin? First off, he’s on Bella Union in the UK (#swoon). He possesses one of the all time great soulful voices ever. He is also a classical violinist, and when he performs he loops his samples live which is incredible to witness – and it also means that it might take an extra 90 seconds for him to start singing. As one might imagine, his R+B and orchestral background made him the perfect match to tour with Lianne La Havas, who informed me how AMAZING he is in real life (and then dissolved into giggles afterwards which I took as a good sign). Hopefully we can get Marques on the show soon when he tours North America in September with Liam Finn! So yes, Bat for Lashes + a drag performer + a R+B classical violist = the new video for “Laura.” Sorted.
